Jari Gustafsson appointed as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy as of 1 October 2015
On 19 March 2015, the Government appointed Jari Gustafsson (56) as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy. The five-year term will begin on 1 October 2015. Erkki Virtanen, who has been the Ministry's Permanent Secretary since the establishment of the Ministry of Employment and the Economy (MEE) in 1 January 2008, will retire in the autumn.
Jari Gustafsson is currently the Finnish Ambassador at the Embassy of Finland in Beijing. From 2009 to 2013 he was Ambassador at the Finnish Embassy in Tokio. His previous positions include board member and deputy member in the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development from 2007 to 2009, deputy director general in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs from 2003 to 2006, head of group in the Ministry of Trade and Industry from 1998 to 2003, counsellor in Finland's Permanent Representation to the OECD in Paris from 1995 to 1998 and commercial secretary, senior officer and commercial counsellor at the Ministry of Trade and Industry from 1987 to 1995. Gustafsson holds the degree of Master of Social Sciences.
A permanent secretary directs, develops and monitors the work of the ministry and activities falling within its branch of government. The Ministry of Employment and the Economy employs approximately 520 people and the entire branch of government approximately 12,000. The entire branch, the MEE Group, comprises seven government agencies, three companies and several state-aided institutions and funds together with 15 Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment and 15 Employment and Economic Development Offices.
