Finland proposes new horizontal EU Single Market strategy

Together with 14 other Member States, Finland has published views on the development of the EU Single Market in the coming years. The European Commission and EU Member States agree that the Single Market faces increasing expectations, including due to the digital and green transitions.

The EU’s Competitiveness Council will meet in Brussels on 7–8 December 2023. Minister of Employment Arto Satonen will represent Finland in the meeting of ministers responsible for internal market and industry on 7 December. Meanwhile, Minister of Economic Affairs Wille Rydman will be Finland’s representative at the meeting of the ministers responsible for research and space on 8 December.

The EU has updated its Single Market Scoreboard especially with regard to the transposition of EU legislation in 2022. The results indicate that Member States have made some progress in implementing and enforcing the single market rules despite the shock to the single market caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Finland’s performance continues to be above EU average.

EU competitiveness ministers to discuss the internal market’s competitiveness with the aim of adopting two general approaches

The EU ministers responsible for competitiveness will discuss the internal market and ways to improve the Union’s competitiveness. Ministers will seek to adopt general approaches on a proposed directive concerning distance marketing of financial services and on a proposed regulation on short-term accommodation rental services.
