Working group on peat proposes ways to help the sector in transition and to increase role of peat in security of supply

The working group on peat, which was appointed by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, submitted its report to Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä on 31 March 2021. The report includes measures to improve the situation of peat industry operators as demand for energy peat declines sharply due to the emission allowance prices rising much faster than previously forecast.

On Tuesday 6 October 2020, the EU energy ministers will hold an informal video conference meeting to discuss the Union’s more stringent emissions reduction and energy targets for 2030. The meeting is based on the Commission’s communications on 17 September that the emission reduction target will be raised to at least 55% compared to 1990 levels and its assessments of the National Energy and Climate Plans (NECP). Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä will represent Finland at the meeting.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has begun the preparation of a new national climate and energy strategy. It is being prepared in a coordinated manner with, and on the same knowledge base as, the medium-term climate plan, which in turn is drawn up under the leadership of the Ministry of the Environment. Investment incentives to promote rapid phase-out of coal in energy production

On 19 March 2020, the Finnish Government issued a decree on investment aid for projects accelerating the replacement of coal in energy production. The aid is intended to promote voluntary phase-out of coal use by the end of 2025. Coal-based power and heat generation will be banned in Finland as of 1 May 2029
