Government proposal on conflict minerals to promote transparency of supply chains and responsible procurement

On 29 October 2020, the Government submitted a proposal on an act on the placing on the market of conflict minerals and their ores. The proposal aims to improve the transparency of supply chains.

Finland’s Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä met with Minister of Economic Affairs Mikael Damberg from Sweden in Brussels on Monday 12 March 2018. The ministers agreed that the countries will work together on preparations to create an accountability certificate concerning products in the mining industry.

As part of its Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2021, Finland will organise the Council’s ministerial meetings. Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä will chair three meetings of the Nordic Council of Ministers for Sustainable Growth. The meetings of ministers in charge of economic affairs and regions will take place on 16 September, while energy ministers will convene on 17 September. All meetings will be organised as hybrid meetings from Helsinki.  

Report proposes changes to the current reservation mechanism for mineral exploration to reduce uncertainty

Mining sector operators consider the current mechanism appropriate. However, according to the Report on the functioning of the reservation mechanism under the Mining Act, published by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment on 14 June 2021, the mechanism creates uncertainty for landowners and local businesses.
