Growing interest in artificial intelligence in public employment services

European public employment services are currently making little or no use of artificial intelligence, as reported in a recent survey by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. Very few national AI strategies, if any, discuss the use of artificial intelligence as a tool for improving employment services. However, several plans and solutions are already in the pipeline.
New ministers of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment appointed
The President of the Republic appointed the Government of Sanna Marin on 10 December 2019. The new ministers of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment are Tuula Haatainen (Social Democratic Party), Minister of Employment, and Mika Lintilä (Centre Party), Minister of Economic Affairs.

Finland to invest in the future skills of Europeans – training one per cent of EU citizens in the basics of AI
During 2020–2021, Finland will provide European citizens with free access to a successful online course, the Elements of AI. The course will be made available in all the official EU languages. This initiative by the Finnish Presidency aims to respond to the challenges posed by the transformation of work and to reinforce the digital leadership of the EU.
EU employment ministers discussed improving labour law
EU employment ministers gave guidance to the new European Commission regarding the Member States’ main objectives for EU labour law and social dialogue. Nicolas Schmit, the new Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, briefed the ministers on the Commission’s plans for the next five-year period.
Space innovations facilitate daily life and support climate action

The European Space Week held in Helsinki on 3–5 December focused on the key themes of Finland’s Presidency of the EU Council: space solutions as contributors to climate action, new space economy for sustainable growth, sustainable space economy, and space solutions for a sustainable Arctic.
