Investment incentives to promote rapid phase-out of coal in energy production - Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment

19.3.2020 | On 19 March 2020, the Finnish Government issued a decree on investment aid for projects accelerating the replacement of coal in energy production. The aid is intended to promote voluntary phase-out of coal use by the end of 2025. Coal-based power and heat generation will be banned in Finland as of 1 May 2029

Report: Degree of unionisation among employees down to less than 60 per cent in 2017 - Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment

11.3.2019 | Employee membership in employee organisations continues to lose its popularity. In 2017, just over a half of male and two thirds of female employees were trade union members. Since 2013, the degree of unionisation has fallen by five percentage points. The number of trade union members is smaller in private service sectors than in other sectors. These were the conclusions of a study conducted by Lasse Ahtiainen at the request of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment.

The interim report compiles the concrete objectives and proposed measures for achieving the artificial intelligence vision for 2030.

28.3.2017 | Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation and Finpro, a provider of internationalisation advisory services, will be merged into a new operator carrying the working title Business Finland. Business Finland will gather all services related to the promotion of innovation funding, exports, investments and tourism under one roof. About 600 experts will be transferred to the new organisation.

The initiative was signed by the Presidents of Finland and the United States Alexander Stubb and Joe Biden and Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau.

Employers to notify TE Offices of dismissals for financial or production-related reasons - Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment

16.1.2020 | The Government proposes the reimposition of employers’ obligation to notify and inform Employment and Economic Development Offices (TE Offices) in situations where personnel were dismissed for financial or production-related reasons. On 16 January 2020, the Government submitted to Parliament a proposal on an act amending the Employment Contracts Act, and related legislation.

19.11.2025 | On 18 November, Finland, the United States and Canada signed a trilateral Joint Statement of Intent (JSOI) confirming support for the Icebreaker Collaboration Effort (ICE) Pact, launched in autumn 2024. The JSOI was signed in Washington DC by Sakari Puisto, the Finnish Minister of Economic Affairs, Kristi Noem, the United States Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, and Kirsten Hillman, Canada’s Ambassador to the United States.

Consultation round on legislative amendments on local collective bargaining to start - Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment

1.3.2024 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment is circulating the draft legislation on promoting local bargaining for comments between 1 March and 12 April 2024. The proposals for the legislative amendments have been prepared by a tripartite working group, which was unable to produce a unanimous report.

20.3.2020 | The Government has decided on first-hand measures to be taken to secure people’s livelihoods and liquidity of companies in the difficult situation caused by the coronavirus. The Government will implement most of the measures proposed by the labour market organisations, on request of Minister of Employment Tuula Haatainen.
