Pressmeddelande
The European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) will contribute EUR 2.6 million to support the employment of workers made redundant in the software sector in Finland. The European Parliament made the final decision about the EU support on 15 December 2015. Additionally, Finland will finance the employment of redundant workers by EUR 1.8 million.

Minister of Justice and Employment Jari Lindström and Minister of Economic Affairs Olli Rehn are satisfied with the decision.

- The support is a part of the management of big structural changes. Together with the national contribution the support will make it possible for redundant workers to develop their competencies and to find employment, Minister Lindström says.

- Thanks to the funding decision Finland will be able to retain a strong competence base in the software sector in Finland.  It is important that the expertise of the people in the sector will soon be available in the labour market, Minister of Economic Affairs Rehn says.

A new application for EGR support is under preparation following Microsoft's dismissals

The EGR co-funds 60% of the costs while the national contribution is set at 40%. The contributions from the EGF are directed at active labour market measures, including mentoring, training, promoting mobility, providing pay subsidies and supporting business start-ups.

The EU support that has now been granted will help especially the 1,200 people in the Uusimaa and North Ostrobothnia regions, who lost their jobs in the autumn 2014 and spring 2015.

Finland will submit a new EGR application to the European Commission in early 2016, concerning the job cuts made by Microsoft last summer. The application concerns about 1,800 people, who lost their jobs in the Uusimaa, Southwest Finland and Pirkanmaa regions. It is larger in size than the one granted for the software sector.

Support from the EGR together with the national contributions means that more than EUR 10 million will be directed in the next few years at supporting workers who have been made redundant.
