Energy use of coal to end in Finland during spring

The use of coal in Finnish energy production will end this spring as energy companies Helen and Vantaan Energia will close their last remaining power plant units using coal. The energy use of coal will thus end four years before the deadline of May 2029 required by law. In this way, Finland is taking another major step towards an energy system that is cleaner, more self-sufficient and climate neutral.

Government submits industrial policy report to Parliament

The Government submitted to Parliament its report on industrial policy on 27 March 2025. According to the report, Finland must improve the competitiveness of its investment environment by predictable regulation and sufficient incentives. Companies must increase their intangible investments to enhance productivity and the value added. Public funding must be used more efficiently to boost new sectors and diversify the economic structure.

EU energy ministers to discuss affordable energy and energy security

The first Energy Council meeting under the Polish Presidency will be held in Brussels on 17 March 2025 with a focus on the Commission’s action plan for affordable energy and the energy security situation in the EU. Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala will represent Finland at the meeting.

Financial statement for 2024 of National Nuclear Waste Management Fund has been adopted

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has adopted the financial statement of the National Nuclear Waste Management Fund for 2024 and decided on the recognition of the profit of the Fund as revenue. The Fund consists of two separate funds, the Financial Provision Fund and the Research Fund for Nuclear Energy Expertise.
