Fennovoima Oy’s construction licence application

In June 2015, Fennovoima Oy submitted to the government a construction licence application concerning the Hanhikivi 1 nuclear power plant and its updated version in August 2015.

To supplement the construction licence application as conditioned by the decision-in-principle, in June 2016, Fennovoima Oy submitted to the coordinating authority an environmental impact assessment programme for the company’s own spent nuclear fuel disposal facility. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment gave its final statement in December 2016.

On 28 April 2021, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment received an update from Fennovoima Oy related to information in its construction licence application for the Hanhikivi 1 nuclear power plant. In the update, the company describes the key developments that have taken place in the project since 2015 when the company submitted the application to build the plant.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment prepares the decision on a construction licence for the Government in accordance with the Nuclear Energy Act. The decision requires that the future safety assessment by the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority is positive and that all the conditions required by the Act are met.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment updated the circulation for comment related to the application, due to the time that has passed. Any statements and opinions presented have been published on the Finnish website.
