Urban Policy Committee

On 12 May 2016, the Government appointed a new Urban Policy Committee, which will be tasked with the coordination and development of the urban policy measures of different ministries. Its objective will be to strengthen partnerships between the Government, cities, and urban regions, to promote the ability of urban regions to renew, as well as their competitiveness, social sustainability and capacity to deal with challenges related to climate change.

The committee's key tasks are as follows: to promote the realisation of urban policies outlined in the Government Programme and the Government's regional development decision, to coordinate the ministries' urban policy measures, to develop forms of cooperation between the Government and urban regions, and to promote national and international networking and exchange of experiences of urban regions.

Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä will chair the committee and vice-chairman is Minister of Agriculture and the Environment Kimmo Tiilikainen. The committee includes representation from the majority of ministries, the cities of Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Tampere, Turku, Oulu, Jyväskylä, Lahti, Kuopio, Kouvola, Lappeenranta, Vaasa, Joensuu and Salo as well as the Association of Finnish Local and Regional Authorities. The committee's term of office began on 12 May 2016, and will come to an end when Prime Minister Juha Sipilä's government's term ends.
