Terrafame’s recovery of uranium

In February 2020, the Government granted Terrafame Ltd a licence referred to in the Nuclear Energy Act for mining and ore enrichment activities. The Supreme Administrative Court ruled on appeals filed on 24.6.2021. The Supreme Administrative Court left the permit in force for the most part, so the permit became legally valid on 24.6.2021. The permit entitles the company to recover uranium from ore from the Sotkamo mine. Terrafame's mine is a multi-metal production plant, and the recovery of uranium is part of this entity.

Before commencing operations, the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) had to verify that the nuclear safety requirements for recovery had been met. STUK issued a decision on 18.6.2024 stating that the recovery facility is ready to be commissioned. Terrafame began the recovery of uranium at the Sotkamo mine in June 2024.

The decision is available electronically on the Government website only in Finnish.
