International students create innovations and bring growth to Finland

The number of international higher education students in Finland has grown in recent years. They support the internationalisation of Finnish education and research.

Students who find employment in Finland after graduation are an important group of skilled labour that contributes to economic growth and responds to the growing competence needs in the future. At the same time, it is necessary to ensure that students and their families have sufficient income during the studies and do not end up in a vulnerable position in Finland.

To further increase the number of international higher education students, the Government wants to create more incentives for them to stay in Finland after graduation. The fast track for a permanent residence permit for graduates of Finnish higher education institutions is a good example of this. In addition, the integration of students into the Finnish labour market after graduation will be advanced together with higher education institutions, cities and companies.

At the same time, the Government is preparing two legislative packages to address students’ income difficulties and to improve supervision.
