Environmental impact assessment of the final disposal project

An environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedure on the project concerning the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel was carried out in 1998–1999.

The basic solution evaluated in the procedure concerned the final disposal of the spent nuclear fuel generated by the Olkiluoto plant units 1 and 2 and Loviisa plant units 1 and 2 over the course of their respective 40 and 60 years in operation. The assessment also covered a situation where spent fuel generated by two new plant units to be constructed in Finland would also be placed in the final disposal facility.

The most recent EIA procedure was carried out in 2008-2009. The procedure included an alternative in which the final disposal capacity of spent nuclear fuel would be extended to a maximum of 12,000 tonnes of uranium.
