The Government proposes to introduce a one-year waiting period for family reunification of students, to clarify the amount of required financial resources and to add a language skill requirement to the residence permit for studies.

Three industrial biogenic carbon capture projects receive EUR 26.6 million in aid

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has granted a total of EUR 26.6 million to three industrial biogenic carbon capture projects. The decision was made on 9 September 2026. The carbon dioxide captured in the projects will be used to produce electrofuels.

Ministers visited Posiva’s encapsulation plant and final disposal facility

On 7 September 2026, Minister of Climate Change and the Environment Sari Multala visited Posiva Oy’s spent nuclear fuel encapsulation plant and final disposal facility in Eurajoki. Multala was accompanied to the facility by the Estonian Minister of Energy and the Environment Andres Sutt and Latvia’s Minister for Climate and Energy Jānis Vitenbergs. A representative from the German federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy also participated in the visit.

Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala will attend the Nordic-Baltic 8 (NB8) meeting of energy ministers in Tallinn on 4 September 2026. In the meeting, representatives of Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania will discuss the energy situation in Ukraine, critical energy infrastructure and the competitiveness of the energy market.

Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto will visit China, travelling to Beijing, Shanghai and Xiamen from 5 to 11 September 2026. A Finnish business delegation will accompany him at the CIFIT investment and trade fair in Xiamen and in Shanghai. The visit aims to support the operating conditions of Finnish companies in trade and investment with China.
