Forum for sustainable maritime trade – Discussion on the challenges and opportunities of the green transition in maritime logistics
A forum for sustainable maritime trade, convened by Minister of Transport and Communications Timo Harakka and Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä, will take place on 24 November 2022. The forum aims to generate discussion on the challenges and opportunities of the green transition in maritime logistics for Finland.
“Global maritime transport must be completely carbon-free by 2050. Now is the time to consider what kinds of solutions and new ways of cooperation are needed in Finland to enable the green transition. Today’s forum is an important step in the right direction,” says Minister of Transport and Communications Timo Harakka.
“This technological transformation, which is known as the green transition, also means great export opportunities. Companies in the Finnish maritime cluster are leaders in the development of clean technology for ports and seas globally. For this, we need to consider the right funding solutions,” Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä says.
The forum aims to create a common situation picture for maritime logistics operators, energy industry companies supplying fuel solutions to ships, large shippers and the government about the importance that international measures to reduce emissions from maritime logistics and future energy solutions in sea transport in the Baltic Sea have for Finland.
The forum’s key tasks are to:
1. create an outlook of the investment needs required by the green transition in maritime logistics in Finland,
2. examine the cost effects that the emissions regulation negotiated by the IMO and the EU will have on Finland, relative to the climate benefits achieved and the emission reduction targets set,
3. create an outlook for the development of the green transition to maritime logistics in the Baltic Sea region which will maintain Finland’s relative competitiveness, and
4. assess the funding opportunities that support the transition, both at the EU and national level.
In addition to representatives of the ministries, representatives of shipping companies, seafarers’ unions, ports, port cities, shippers, companies selling fuel to ships and maritime industry companies as well as organisations supporting the protection of the marine environment are invited to the forum.
