Nordic energy ministers to meet in Helsinki to discuss energy security
This year Finland holds the Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers, together with Åland. The Nordic energy ministers will meet in Helsinki on 1 October to discuss energy security and the electricity market. Finland will be represented by Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala and, on behalf of Åland, by Minister Camilla Gunell.
The discussion on energy security will be led by Minister Sari Multala, Iceland’s Minister for the Environment, Energy and Climate Jóhann Páll Jóhannsson and Energy Security team lead Julijus Grubliauskas of NATO’s HQ Hybrid Strategy and Policy Section.
During the meeting, Ukraine’s Minister of Energy Svitlana Hrynchuk will tell the Nordic ministers about her country’s experiences of energy security during Russia’s invasion in 2022. Russia has systematically targeted and destroyed Ukraine’s energy infrastructure – power plants and the electricity grid – in order to cause suffering to civilians, especially in winter.
Affordable electricity and Nordic co-operation on the electricity market will also be discussed at the meeting. Lars Aagaard, Denmark’s Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities, will provide an introduction to competitiveness and cooperation in the electricity market, while Terje Aasland, Norway’s Minister of Energy, will speak about moderate energy prices.
Nordic energy security seminar to take place on 30 September
Ahead of the meeting, a seminar on Nordic energy security co-operation will be held in Helsinki on 30 September. The seminar will focus on resilience and preparedness and be opened by Minister Multala. Threats to the Nordic energy system call for new forms of co-operation and support for existing initiatives.
The seminar will address 1) resilience of critical energy infrastructure, 2) resilience in autonomous regions and islands, 3) security of supply and 4) security of gas supply in the Nordic countries.
