Pekka Ala-Pietilä appointed as chair of the EU’s High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence
Pekka Ala-Pietilä has been appointed as the chair of the EU’s High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence (AI HLG). The group, appointed by the European Commission in June, convened for the first time on 27 June 2018.
Ala-Pietilä was appointed as chair because of his experience, vision and leadership style. He also chairs Finland’s Artificial Intelligence Programme, which was set up by Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä.
The AI HLG will draft a proposal for artificial intelligence (AI) ethics guidelines by the end of 2018. It will also prepare a proposal for a competitiveness strategy on AI by summer 2019. The proposals will contribute to the EU’s next multiannual financial framework for 2021–2027 and the priorities of the next European Commission.
The Expert Group has 52 members, representing companies, research institutes and civil society organisations. The Commission appointed the experts based on an open selection process, which attracted more than 500 applications.
