Comments accepted on the EIA programme of Olkiluoto plant units until 25 March
The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has sent for comments an environmental impact assessment programme (EIA programme) concerning the continued operation of Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO) Olkiluoto 1 and Olkiluoto 2 nuclear power plant units in Eurajoki. TVO submitted the EIA programme to the Ministry in January. The deadline for submitting comments is 25 March 2024.
Comments and opinions on the EIA programme can be submitted on the Lausuntopalvelu.fi website or directly to the ministry’s registry. A public event will also be organised concerning the project at the Olkiluoto visitor centre in Eurajoki on 6 February.
The EIA programme assesses the continuation of the use of Olkiluoto 1 and Olkiluoto 2 plant units until 2048 or 2058. In addition to extending the service life, increasing the thermal output of units from the current 2,500 megawatts to 2,750 megawatts is an alternative.
The plant units were put into service in 1978 (Olkiluoto 1) and 1980 (Olkiluoto 2). The service life originally planned for the units was 40 years, but it was extended in 2018 with a user licence granted by the Government until 2038.
