Finland deltar i mötet för G20-ländernas energi- och miljöministrar i Japan 15-16.6

Japan har inbjudit Finland att delta i mötet för G20-ländernas energi- och miljöministrar i Karuizawa 15-16.6.2019. Mötet är ett av evenemangen under Japans ordförandeskap i G20-gruppen. Finland är ett av de s.k. outreach-länder som bjudits in att delta i mötet. Mötets teman är det globala ombrytningsskedet inom energisektorn, klimatet och den hållbara utvecklingen, förebyggande av marin nedskräpning med plast och resurseffektivitet.

Finland representeras vid mötet av kanslichef Jari Gustafsson från arbets- och näringsministeriet och kanslichef Hannele Pokka från miljöministeriet. Mötet består av en gemensam del och av skilda möten för energiministrarna och miljöministrarna.

Målet för energiministrarnas möte är att betona vikten av växelverkan ifråga om ekonomisk tillväxt, miljöfrågor, energitrygghet och utsläppsminskning. Ett ytterligare syfte är att stärka G20-ländernas roll i energiomvälvningen och främja innovationerna inom energisektorn. Finland förväntas bidra med sitt kunnande särskilt i frågor som gäller slutförvaringen av kärnavfall där Finland är en global föregångare. Vid mötet ska Finland dessutom presentera metoder med vars hjälp man kan framskrida mot ett flexibelt och rent energisystem.

Teman för miljöministrarnas möte är bl.a. resurseffektivitet och cirkulär ekonomi, problemen med plast i havet samt innovationer och naturbaserade lösningar som främjare av en renare miljö och anpassningen till klimatförändringen. På grund av sin kunskap om cirkulär ekonomi och ett ambitiöst nationellt plastprogram förväntas Finland bidra stort till mötets teman.

Japan är ordförandeland för G20 för allra första gången. Under sitt ordförandeskap ska Japan främja bl.a. FN:s mål för hållbar utveckling och frihandeln.

I Japan har Finland profilerat sig som ett expertland i fråga om kärnavfall och cirkulär ekonomi. Särskilt forumet för cirkulär ekonomi WCEF i Jokohama i höstas gav det finländska kunnandet och Finlands aktiva roll positiv synlighet. Under det innevarande året firar dessutom Finland och Japan hundra år av diplomatiska förbindelser.
