Minister Mykkänen discussed the future of nuclear energy with U.S. Assistant Secretary of energy Michael Goff
The Finnish Minister of Climate and the Environment, Kai Mykkänen met with members of an American nuclear energy delegation visiting Finland and Sweden on June 6, 2024. The group was led by the U.S. Acting Assistant Secretary of Energy responsible for nuclear energy, Michael Goff, and the CEO of the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), Maria Korsnick. The delegation includes nearly 20 influential figures in the American nuclear energy sector.
During the meeting with the minister, discussions focused on Finland's plans related to nuclear energy, the promotion of small modular reactors (SMRs), and Finland's role as a world leader in nuclear waste management.
During their visit to Finland, the delegation will also meet with other representatives of the government, experts from Finnish nuclear energy companies, and research institutions. The delegation will also familiarize themselves with nuclear waste management solutions in Olkiluoto, Eurajoki.
As part of the visit, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment is hosting a workshop where Finnish and American stakeholders in the field discussed the state of nuclear energy, the opportunities offered by Finland in this sector, and the availability and development of expertise.
In the spring of 2023, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) concerning nuclear energy and nuclear waste management. The aim of this MOU is to enhance cooperation between governments, companies, and research institutions in various aspects of the civil nuclear power.
