Innovation-friendly legislative culture at the agenda of the Conference on the Innovation Principle on 3 December
The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment will organise, in collaboration with the European Commission, a High-Level Conference on the Innovation Principle in Helsinki on 3 December 2019.
The conference is part of the official programme of Finland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, and it will discuss ways of developing an innovation-friendly legislative culture in Europe.
The conference will bring together high-level decision makers, businesses, researchers, NGOs and other stakeholders to discuss and share their insights and experiences on how innovation-friendly legislative culture can strengthen Europe’s competitiveness and sustainable growth, and increase the effectiveness of investment in research and innovation.
Minister of Economic Affairs Katri Kulmuni emphasises the importance of research and innovation in Europe as we strive to become the most competitive and socially integrated climate-neutral economy in the world.
“We need to create the best possible operating environment in Europe: one that allows business innovation, scalability and rapid growth. The next steps of the single market must take better into account the effects of regulations on innovation and market development,” says Minister Kulmuni.
Carlos Moedas, European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, emphasises the importance of the innovation principle: “Well-designed laws can support and foster innovation that protect people’s health and the environment. Using the innovation principle in EU policy-making is essential to address key challenges, such as climate change and cancer; it will help us get more value out of our research funding and deliver solutions for a European Green Deal.”
Jari Gustafsson, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, will open the conference. The keynote speakers will be Professor Karen Yeung from the University of Birmingham and Deputy Director-General Signe Ratso from the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation. Other organisations taking part in the discussions include OECD, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, NESTA, Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL), Compensate Foundation and BusinessEurope. In addition, several countries and the European Commission will present examples of innovation-friendly regulation.
