Minister of Transport, Communications and the Interior Lulu Ranne

Lulu Ranne took over the duties of the Minister of the Interior on Friday 30 August. Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen resigned from her post, and Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne was appointed to serve as Minister of Transport, Communications and the Interior.  Minister Ranne is responsible for matters related to integration covered by the Labour Migration and Integration Unit of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment.


New Board appointed for National Nuclear Waste Management Fund

On 29 August 2024, the Government appointed a new Board for the National Nuclear Waste Management Fund for the term of 1 September 2024–31 August 2027. The chair of the new Board will be Chief Risk Officer Jarkko Heikkilä from the Elo Mutual Pension Insurance Company.

Number of work-based and education-based residence permit applications has increased in 2024

The number of applications increased slightly from the previous year while the processing times for permits shortened significantly. In the first part of 2024, 15,959 people applied for the first permit, compared with 15,493 persons during the same time last year.

In October 2023, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment appointed a working group to examine ways to improve Finland’s competitive position in offshore wind power production compared with other Baltic Sea countries and to promote other targets on offshore wind power set out in the Government Programme. The proposals included in the report published by the working group on 20 August 2024 form an action plan for the promotion of offshore wind power.

306,000 unemployed jobseekers in July

The number of unemployed jobseekers rose by 27,200 from July of last year. The number of new vacancies reported totalled 25,100. In all, the number of unfilled vacancies in July was 48,200, which is 53,500 fewer than a year ago.
