Advisory Council on Consumer Affairs

The Advisory Council on Consumer Affairs operates under the auspices of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. Its task is to:

  1. monitor the general development of consumer affairs and the activities of government authorities, who process consumer affairs, as well as to submit proposals and initiatives that its feels are appropriate on the bases of these observations to improve the status of consumers and enhance the efficiency of processing consumer affairs;
  2. see to it that coordination of necessary cooperation and activities is achieved between authorities that handle consumer affairs and ensures necessary cooperation in consumer affairs between authorities that handle consumer affairs, consumer organisations, employee organisations, industrial, commercial and agricultural organisations, as well as other parties;
  3. give statements in matters related to consumer research, consumer protection and consumer education, as well as other procedures that are important to consumers.

The Government invites the council members and deputy members for a term of three years at a time. Members include representatives of authorities that handle consumer affairs, consumer organisations, employee organisations and industrial, commercial and agricultural organisations. The minister in charge of consumer affairs at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment (Arto Satonen) acts as chairman of the council.
