Government grants Fortum a licence to operate the disposal facility for Loviisa nuclear power plant’s low and intermediate level waste

On 30 March 2023, the Government granted Fortum Power and Heat Oy an operating licence for the disposal facility for low and intermediate level waste, located in the Loviisa power plant area. The new licence, which will be in force until 2090, will replace the current one expiring in 2055.
National programme for spent fuel and radioactive waste management completed

The national programme and environmental impact assessment of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste management were published on 1 March 2022. The programme was drawn up by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health together with the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority. The programme’s aim is to ensure that all spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste generated in Finland is managed safely and without undue delay.
Posiva to apply for an operating licence for a spent nuclear fuel disposal facility first in the world

On 30 December 2021, Posiva Oy submitted to the Government an operating licence application referred to in the Nuclear Energy Act for an encapsulation plant and a disposal facility for spent nuclear fuel. The facility is currently under construction in Olkiluoto, Eurajoki. Posiva is applying for an operating licence for a period from March 2024 to the end of 2070.
