The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment requests comments on Posiva Oy’s application for an operating licence that the company submitted to the Government on 30 December 2021 for an encapsulation plant and a disposal facility for spent nuclear fuel. The encapsulation plant is located above ground and an underground repository of the disposal facility is located in the bedrock at a depth of approximately 400–430 metres in Olkiluoto, Eurajoki.

Finland and Sweden have sent a letter to Mairead McGuinness, EU Commissioner for financial services, financial stability and the Capital Markets Union, in which they express their concerns about the proposed technical screening criteria for nuclear power in the draft complementary delegated act of the EU Taxonomy Regulation. The College of Commissioners is expected to publish the final delegated act this week.

Energy efficiency agreements: Companies and municipalities cut annual energy use by nearly 9 TWh

With the measures implemented in 2017–2020, nearly 600 companies and 112 municipalities and joint municipal authorities that have signed voluntary energy efficiency agreements were able to cut energy use by a total of 8.9 terawatt hours (TWh) annually at the end of 2020. The savings achieved equal the annual energy use of nearly 450,000 electrically heated single-family houses.

Working group to explore possibilities to promote energy sector integration

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has appointed a working group on energy sector integration tasked with presenting concrete solutions on how to promote sector integration. The working group’s term runs from 1 August 2020 to 30 June 2021. It will submit a mid-term report on 1 February 2021 and a final report on 30 June 2021.

The Government granted an operating licence to the nuclear power plant unit Olkiluoto 3

On 7 March 2019, the Finnish Government granted Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO) an operating licence under section 20 of the Nuclear Energy Act for the nuclear power plant unit Olkiluoto 3. The licence will remain in effect until 31 December 2038. Teollisuuden Voima has announced that regular commercial use of the plant is scheduled to begin in early 2020.
