Riku Huttunen to continue as Director-General of the Energy Department in 2020–2024
On 21 November 2019, the Government appointed Riku Huttunen (M. Soc. Sc.) as Director-General of the Energy Department of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment for a five-year period from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2024. Mr Huttunen will continue in the position where he started for the first time on 1.1.2015.
Before his current position, Mr Huttunen served as the Director General of the Energy Authority in 2011–2014. In 2005–2011, he held senior specialist and counsellor positions and served as the acting Director General of the Ministry of Trade and Industry (Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment as of 1 January 2008). He has also worked in Finland’s Permanent Representation to the European Union in Brussels and at the VATT Institute for Economic Research.
A total of 11 persons applied for the post of Director-General of the Energy Department of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment.
The Energy Department is responsible for energy and climate policy
Finland’s energy policy draws on three key principles: energy, the economy and the environment. This means securing the availability of energy at a competitive price while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The Energy Department is responsible for developing the energy market and security of supply, promoting renewable energy, energy technology and energy efficiency, and for nuclear energy. The Department’s responsibilities also include implementing emissions trading and coordinating the national preparation and implementation of climate policy.
