The SET-Plan conference in Helsinki will tackle the climate challenge with new technologies
The European Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan) Conference will be arranged from 14 to 15 November in Helsinki. Finlandia Hall will host around 450 participants to discuss energy and low carbon technologies and how energy research and innovation can promote climate-friendly solutions while boosting the competitiveness of European industry.
Finnish Prime Minister Antti Rinne will open the conference. Other speakers at the opening ceremony are Jean-Eric Paquet, Director-General, DG Research and Innovation, and Ditte Juul-Jörgensen, Director-General, DG Energy of European Commission.
The high-level panel following the opening will look at different perspectives on the role of the Energy Union and Horizon Europe in promoting climate change and clean energy transition research and innovation, while ensuring industrial competitiveness and citizens' participation. Involved in the discussion are among others International Energy Agency IEA, World Meteorological Organization WEO, International Renewable Energy Agency IRENA, Mission Innovation Initiative and European Commission.
Conference 10 sessions will address, inter alia, carbon dioxide emissions from industry, interconnections between energy sectors and the development of renewable energy. Funding, low-carbon technologies, nuclear innovation and the role of women in the energy sector will also be discussed.
Innovative technologies that promote climate neutrality are linked to a number of current EU financial instruments. From 2020, the Innovation Fund will finance the implementation of major new technology solutions in Europe. Horizon Europe will finance, inter alia, research on climate-neutral technologies in Europe 2021-2027.
For the first time, the SET-Plan conference is taking place in Finland. It is also part of the Finnish EU Presidency program. SET-Plan meetings have been held since 2008. They provide an opportunity for policy makers, companies, researchers and stakeholders to evaluate progress on the objectives of the European Strategic Energy Technology Plan.
