The 2023 outlook reports for the food and mining sectors published
The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment publishes outlook reports on the current and future situation of specific sectors. On 9 June 2023, we published an outlook report for the food and mining sectors, in which we address the factors and trends shaping the development of these sectors.
The food sector: Competence, adaptation and renewal drive success
Rising food prices are dominating the news in the food sector following an increase in production costs that has affected the entire food system. The increase in food prices is expected to slow down and take a downward turn towards the end of the year. Consumers are increasingly priceconscious. Online food stores have been struggling with profitability despite volume growth. Even though the current outlook is uncertain, Finnish food companies are investing in product development.

The mining sector: Green transition facilitates EU’s critical raw material supply
On 16 March 2023, the European Commission published a communication and a proposal for a Regulation regarding critical raw materials. With its proposal, the Commission seeks to strengthen the EU’s self-sufficiency, the Single Market and critical raw material partnerships. The review process on the proposed regulation is moving along swiftly. Investments in the green transition support domestic mining. Environmental impact assessment and permitting processes are currently under way for several mining projects in Northern Finland.
