On 30 December 2021, Posiva Oy submitted to the Government an operating licence application referred to in the Nuclear Energy Act for an encapsulation plant and a disposal facility for spent nuclear fuel. The facility is currently under construction in Olkiluoto, Eurajoki. Posiva is applying for an operating licence for a period from March 2024 to the end of 2070.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, and the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority published a draft of the national programme for spent fuel and radioactive waste management on 5 August 2021. A report on the environmental impacts of the programme was released at the same time.

Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi will visit Finland on 25–26 November 2020. On Wednesday, he will meet President of the Republic Sauli Niinistö and Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä and discuss with Minister for Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto and Minister for Development and Foreign Trade Ville Skinnari. On Thursday, Mr Grossi will visit Eurajoki.
