Elements of AI course continues to increase artificial intelligence skills among Europeans

Elements of AI, launched during Finland’s Presidency of the Council of the EU, is the first educational course launched across Europe and an important investment in artificial intelligence (AI) skills throughout the continent. The course is available in all official EU languages. It was started with funding from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and will continue to increase Europeans’ competence in AI in cooperation with the University of Helsinki and Reaktor.

Sustainable Growth Programme for Finland
The first application round for energy investment subsidies under the Sustainable Growth Programme for Finland will take place from 20 December 2021 to 4 March 2022. Funding will be available for energy infrastructure projects, new energy technology, production and storage of low-carbon hydrogen, carbon dioxide capture and use, and investments to reduce carbon use and electrify industrial processes.

Commission issues proposal to improve working conditions in platform work

On 9 December 2021, the European Commission published a proposed directive on improving working conditions in platform work. The proposal contains provisions on the determination of employment status of people working through digital platforms as well as other requirements. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment will assess the relationship between the proposals and Finnish legislation.

Finland performs comparably well in implementing EU Single Market rules

The European Commission has published the Single Market scoreboard that measures the implementation of the Single Market rules in the Union during 2020. The Single Market refers to the free movement of people, goods, services and capital in the EU. The Commission has extended the scope of the scoreboard to include three new policy areas: business environment for SMEs, greening of the industry, and market surveillance.

Working group report on legislative amendments concerning working conditions and variable hours contracts sent out for comments

The purpose of the proposed amendments is to make working conditions more predictable and to improve the position of those employed under a variable hours contract. This was brought on by the implementation of the EU Directive on Transparent and Predictable Working Conditions and the Government decision to improve the status of employees in temporary employment and on zero-hours contracts. The proposed legislative amendments have been prepared in tripartite consultation.
