Recently published scenarios show that we have a bumpy road ahead to climate neutrality. These scenarios also help us to grasp the magnitude of the climate challenge. To meet the commitments of the Paris Agreement on climate change, we need to take determined action to reduce greenhouse gases. Although we are currently nowhere near the desired level globally, Finland is pursuing ambitious climate goals, both nationally and in its role as the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

A number of climate investments are underway in Finland and across Europe. In the plans, thousands of windmills on land and sea, hydrogen and synthetic fuels, and many other innovative energy solutions will help Europe’s transition to climate neutrality. As an interim target for reaching climate neutrality by 2050, the EU wants to tighten the emission reduction target from 40% to at least 55% by 2030. Although it seems that the EU will exceed the original target, this constitutes a major change. In particular, the way emission reductions are implemented has a major impact on how much the transition will cost and how these costs will be distributed between countries.

7.5.2026 | Based on the 2025 hydrogen auction of its Innovation Fund, the European Commission has selected nine projects that will proceed to agreement negotiations. Among them is the Cloudberry project of Finland’s Vetyalfa Oy. The Commission published the results of the auction on 7 May 2026.

18.2.2026 | Finland and Germany have signed a statement of intent on further cooperation on hydrogen infrastructure, hydrogen technology development and investments in the hydrogen sector.
