26.3.2024 | The European Commission has granted funding for a project that seeks solutions to changes brought by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine to the operating environment in eastern Finland.

1.9.2022 | The measures taken in the administrative branch of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment will support economic growth that is socially, economically and ecologically sustainable. The key objectives include ensuring a predictable investment environment, promoting productivity growth and full use of available labour, supporting clean technology investments and improving energy self-sufficiency.

15.12.2022 | On 15 December 2022, the Government granted a total of EUR 950,000 to strengthen eastern Finland’s vitality and capacity for change. In addition, the Government granted EUR 416,000 for an action plan for clean and stable energy production in the Pyhäjoki economic area.

16.9.2021 | The regional ministers of the Nordic Council of Ministers discussed multilocality and green recovery at the hybrid meeting held in Helsinki on 16 September 2021. The ministers decided to launch a research project to examine the economic, social and environmental impacts of multilocality in different regions.

21.10.2021 | On 21 October 2021, the Government approved the EU regional and structural policy programme, Innovation and Skills in Finland 2021−2027, and decided to submit it to the European Commission. The programme supports industrial, energy, climate, innovation, education and employment policies as well as the work against exclusion and poverty.

14.4.2020 | The Nordic Ministers of business met on Friday April 3 2020, to discuss ways to focus on a cross-Nordic approach to re-energising the trade, industries, tourism, service sectors and innovative fo-cused companies in the Nordic countries following the COVID-19 pandemic.

13.11.2025 | International higher education students could play an even bigger role in driving Finland’s growth. Minister of Employment Matias Marttinen and Minister of Science and Culture Mari-Leena Talvitie invited businesses, cities, higher education institutions and students to find solutions to improve international students’ employment prospects in Finland.

19.3.2020 | The Government has decided on Finland’s regional development priorities for 2020–2023 and objectives until 2030. The aim of regional development is to build sustainable and vital regions, while priorities emphasise the importance of sustainable development and digitalisation.

5.6.2025 | The current legislation on regional development and the EU’s structural policy supports the objectives, but implementation should be more cost-effective in future. The Government submitted a report on the subject to Parliament on 5 June 2025. The report evaluated how well and effectively the system and funding of regional development functions. The assessment will be used as a basis for the legislative reform that will begin in 2026.

15.9.2025 | Minister of the Environment and Climate Sari Multala will take part in the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) General Conference in Vienna on 15–16 September 2025. On Monday, she will deliver Finland’s national statement to the plenary.

29.9.2025 | On Thursday 2 October, Minister of Employment Matias Marttinen will visit Uusikaupunki, where Valmet Automotive has announced that it will initiate change negotiations concerning the Uusikaupunki car factory. Possible solutions that support employment and are suitable for the situation will be sought together with Valmet Automotive and regional actors.

10.2.2025 | The fourth programming period of EU structural funds for Finland ended at the end of last year. Finland made full use of the funding provided by the EU, including additional funding from the EU recovery package. The ‘Sustainable growth and jobs’ programme invested EUR 3 billion in the vitality of Finnish regions to promote the success of companies, RDI activities and citizens.

2.11.2022 | On 2 November 2022, Minister of Economic Affairs Mika Lintilä invited representatives of companies, organisations, and higher education and research institutes to discuss the launch of work to create a vision for development for eastern Finland. Forming a vision for development is one of the recommendations in the final report of the Working group of State Secretaries, which examined the vitality of eastern Finland.

25.3.2024 | Clean energy is one of the main themes of Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s government program in Finland. The energy and climate policy actions for the coming years will be outlined in a comprehensive national strategy. The key objective is to establish a predictable and economically sustainable foundation for the significant investment efforts needed to advance both climate goals and our national economy.

11.2.2025 | The economic expectations of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have remained largely unchanged since last autumn, but they show some improvement from a year ago. Lower inflation and interest rates have had a positive impact on companies’ outlook. According to the SME Barometer published on 11 February 2025, the challenging situation of companies in the retail sector is gradually easing.
