26.4.2026 | On 26 April 2026, Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala visited Ukraine to attend memorials commemorating the Chornobyl nuclear power plant accident 40 years ago and to participate in a high-level meeting on improving the plant safety. She also took part in a G7+ meeting in Kyiv to discuss support for Ukraine for the winter of 2026–2027 amid Russia’s continuing attacks on energy and civilian targets.

13.6.2024 | Seven solar park projects in Finland have been granted a total of EUR 27.5 million through the EU’s Renewable Energy Financing Mechanism (RENEWFM). Under the mechanism, solar power will be built in Finland with funding from Luxembourg. The scheme will strengthen and diversify the production of renewable energy in Finland while promoting the achievement of the national targets for renewable energy in Luxembourg.

21.3.2024 | By 29th February 2024, 62 new applications were received in the application round for REPowerEU energy investment aid under Finland’s Recovery and Resilience Plan. The available investment aid will be allocated to new energy technology projects and production of renewable hydrogen.

22.12.2023 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has granted approximately EUR 30.9 million in energy investment aid under Finland’s Recovery and Resilience Plan to 12 projects related to energy infrastructure and the electrification and decarbonisation of industrial processes. Minister of Climate and the Environment Kai Mykkänen signed the aid decisions on 19 December 2023.

16.2.2024 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has outlined the priorities for energy aid in 2024. Energy aid promotes the production of renewable energy, renewable hydrogen and fuels refined from it, energy saving or more efficient production or use of energy, utilisation of waste heat or the transition towards a low-carbon energy system in other ways.

1.4.2025 | The use of coal in Finnish energy production will end this spring as energy companies Helen and Vantaan Energia will close their last remaining power plant units using coal. The energy use of coal will thus end four years before the deadline of May 2029 required by law. In this way, Finland is taking another major step towards an energy system that is cleaner, more self-sufficient and climate neutral.

24.9.2021 | A draft government decree on aid for energy investments under Finland’s Recovery and Resilience Plan in 2022–2026 is now complete. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment is requesting comments on the draft at the Lausuntopalvelu.fi service by 20 October 2021.

18.12.2023 | The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has granted investment aid to nine demonstration projects on new energy technology. In total, the projects received approximately EUR 90 million.

9.1.2025 | The Government issued a decree on a clean transition aid scheme for industrial investments on 9 January 2025. EUR 400 million has been reserved for the scheme this year. The scheme covers investments implemented in Finland with eligible costs of at least EUR 30 million.

30.5.2024 | EU Energy Ministers will meet in Brussels on May 30. The aim is to adopt the Council conclusions on promoting sustainable electricity network infrastructure. The ministers will also discuss the future of the REPowerEU plan and the status of the Green Deal. Finland will be represented at the meeting by Minister of Climate and the Environment Kai Mykkänen.
