The Government’s climate targets are ambitious: carbon neutrality by 2035, and nearly fossil-free energy production in the course of the 2030s. The wide-ranging changes required to achieve these targets demand vigorous policies and consistent action. At the same time, however, one has to ensure social justice and the competitiveness of businesses. Paths to carbon neutrality involve major uncertainties.

Recently published scenarios show that we have a bumpy road ahead to climate neutrality. These scenarios also help us to grasp the magnitude of the climate challenge. To meet the commitments of the Paris Agreement on climate change, we need to take determined action to reduce greenhouse gases. Although we are currently nowhere near the desired level globally, Finland is pursuing ambitious climate goals, both nationally and in its role as the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Although it seems that the EU will exceed the original target, this constitutes a major change. In particular, the way emission reductions are implemented has a major impact on how much the transition will cost and how these costs will be distributed between countries.

30.10.2024 | By summer 2023, only three years had passed since the publication of the sectoral low-carbon roadmaps in 2020. A provision in Petteri Orpo’s government program from June 2023 mandated the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and various sectors to revisit the roadmaps in light of the evolving operating environment. With this mandate, the update process began in autumn 2023. By autumn 2024, all 14 participating sectors had completed their updates.

Climate neutrality requires that we stop using fossil fuels and increase the use of intermittent renewable energy. Different energy systems should be strongly interlinked to secure the functioning of energy systems and improve their efficiency, with due consideration for the large-scale needs of industrial production. However, we must also beware of the pitfalls on the long path towards sector integration.
